Did I Tell You About... (1/7/21)
Let's be real—we could all use some pop culture distractions right now.
It’s been a week—and somehow, it’s not even Friday yet. Seriously?!
I debated skipping this week’s installment of Did I Tell You About… because of how many far more serious things are on everyone’s minds at the moment, but I figured we could all use a mental break leading into the weekend. Believe me, I know how hard it is to stop constantly refreshing the news, but try to spend at least a little time over the next few days zoning out and distracting yourself from the chaos that is 2021 so far.
If you do take some time off Twitter (do it! Please! I beg of you!), here are some pieces of pop culture I highly recommend focusing on instead:
I’m reading: Luster by Raven Leilani. This book, you guys! It made it onto every “Best of 2020” list (even Obama’s) for a reason—about a Black twenty-something New Yorker hooking up with a man in an open marriage, it’s a jarring, honest (often brutally so) and powerfully written novel.
I’m listening to: The two new Taylor Swift bonus tracks off Evermore, which she so kindly released this morning. I can definitely see why they didn’t make the album; they’re not bad, by any means, but not quite as good as songs like “Champagne Problems” and “Marjorie.” Still, they’re definitely worth a listen, especially “It’s Time to Go” with its clear Scooter Braun references, ahem.
I’m obsessed with: The fact that Perfect Human Harry Styles is dating fellow Perfect Human Olivia Wilde. Honestly, if you’re not also all about this new couple, what’s going on?! They’re both gorgeous, fun, quirky people who make very good art, so it’s kind of a match made in heaven. And Jason Sudeikis will be fine, guys. Promise.
I’m excited about: The trailer for Locked Down, an upcoming thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It’s a pandemic movie, but also a heist movie, and also a romance movie? I don’t even know. But it looks unhinged, and I am into it.
I’m watching: The return of This is Us, which, ICYMI, aired its first new episode since the fall this past Tuesday. I haven’t seen it yet, but I plan to tonight, because even though this show is consistently melodramatic and increasingly unbelievable, I still love it, okay? And let’s be real, so do many of you.
That’s it for this week—I hope everyone gets to relax and enjoy the weekend despite… everything.
Until next time,
Rachel
